What does obstacle avoidance mean?

The digger drives itself across the floor, and when it bumps into something, a wall, a table leg, a foot, it changes direction by itself and carries on. That means it doesn't get stuck in a corner, and the play doesn't need an adult beside it.
Does it need batteries?

Yes, 3 AA batteries, and they aren't included. Buy them in advance if it's being wrapped. The lights, sound and motor all need power.
Can it be used in the sandpit?

No, we wouldn't recommend that. There are electronics and a battery compartment inside, and sand in the mechanism is hard to get out again. It's meant for play indoors or on a clean surface.
Which surface does it run best on?

A level surface: wooden floor, laminate or tiles. On a deep-pile carpet it won't get far, and the light projection also works best on a smooth floor in a dimmed room.
