What does obstacle avoidance mean?

The plane drives itself across the floor, and when it bumps into something, a wall, a table leg, a foot, it changes direction by itself and carries on. That means it doesn't get stuck in a corner, and the play doesn't need an adult beside it.
Does it need batteries?

Yes, 3 AA batteries, and they aren't included. Buy them in advance if the plane is being wrapped for a birthday, otherwise there's a trip to the supermarket before it can be used.
Can the sound be switched off?

The maker doesn't say, unfortunately, and we won't guess. Email us before you order if it matters, for instance if the plane needs to work while a younger sibling naps.
Which surface does it run best on?

A level surface: wooden floor, laminate or tiles. On a deep-pile carpet the wheels won't get far, and that applies to most toys that drive themselves.
