How many cars do I get?

Three: one red, one yellow and one blue. That's enough for two siblings to have one each and still leave one over when one has gone under the sofa.
Do they need batteries?

The maker says nothing about batteries, and the cars appear to be purely mechanical. That means they work the moment the box is opened and can't run out.
Can they be used outdoors?

The wide wheels handle paving, tarmac and firm ground. On loose gravel and wet grass they won't get far, but no car this size does. Brush them off when you come in.
