How does it work?

There's a string with a ring on the side. Pull it out and let go, and a gear mechanism inside winds up and the oars start paddling. The duck sails off until the power runs out, and then you pull again.
Does it need batteries?

No, and that's one of the best things about it. It's all mechanical, set going by your child. There's no battery compartment to leak, and it can't run flat halfway through a bath.
Can it be used in a paddling pool?

Yes. It floats and paddles just as well in a washing-up bowl or a paddling pool as in the bath. In a big pool it can paddle further than a small child can reach, so keep an eye on it there.
