Does my child have to transform it themselves?

No, it does it itself. The vehicle drives as a car, and when it meets an obstacle it rises up and becomes a dinosaur, then back again. That's what lets a small child play with it without help.
Does it need batteries?

Yes, 3 AA batteries, and they aren't included. Buy them in advance if it's being wrapped for a birthday. The transformation, the lights and the sound all need power.
Which surface does it run best on?

A level surface: wooden floor, laminate or tiles. On a deep-pile carpet it can neither drive properly nor stand up, and the transformation is the whole point.
Can the sound be switched off?

The maker doesn't say, and we won't guess. Email us before you order if it matters, for instance if it needs to work while a younger sibling naps.
